Hoisting of the Green Flag

In June 2005, Woodlawn National School was awarded the 'Green Flag' by Galway County Council and An Taisce in recognition of our successful efforts in implementing a pro-recycling waste management system.
The official unveiling of the Green Flag was carried out by former pupil and mayor of Galway County Council, Councillor Michael Mullin assisted by the deputy county Environmental Officer.

Art in the Classroom

School Wins Highly Coveted Heritage Award!

At the prestigious Galway County Heritage Awards in September 2006, our school won the highly coveted Special Commendation Award for our film documentary on Woodlawn House.
For a small school, this was an amazing achievement and was a credit to the excellent library reserach and field work undertaken byu the pupils and teachers.
The project was part of the 'Fionn' Primary School programme coordinated by Brendan Smith on behalf of the Galway Science & Tecnology Festival Board and the Galway Education Centre
The video is available on a number of important science and educational websites. We also hope to have it accessible via our website very soon.

Giant Oak Tree

The eight foot high tree on the left represents a wonderful fusion of Art and Science.
As part of the 'Fionn' Primary School Project, the school was provided with a giant canvas on which the outline of a Oak Tree was drawn.
Over the course of a school year, the pupils populated the bare branches, roots and bark with leaves made from cloth and real moss and ivy foraged from the neighbouring woods.
Scientific Research was also carried out on the type of flora and fauna associated with an Irish Oak Tree that is quite common in our area. The children then made replicas of badgers, worms, squirrels, and the Jay bird from a mis-mash of recycled materials- cloth, paper and cardboard.
The model was so good that it formed part of an environmental education exhibition featured in Science Festivals, Libraries and the City Hall in Galway City
